If your canister filter is sucking gravel, unplug it before making adjustments. In most cases, the intake is too close to the substrate, the intake strainer is missing or damaged, or the filter is pulling water too strongly through an exposed gap. Raise the intake, inspect its guard, and add a properly fitted prefilter sponge if your aquarium and filter manufacturer allow it.

1. Unplug the filter and remove the gravel

Disconnect power before reaching into the aquarium or opening the intake system. Remove any gravel trapped in the intake strainer, hose, impeller area, or filter canister. Gravel can restrict flow and may damage the impeller if it reaches the motor assembly.

Do not run the filter while gravel is being pulled through the intake. If you hear grinding, rattling, or repeated clicking after clearing it, stop the filter and inspect the impeller according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Check the intake strainer

The strainer should have all of its protective slots or openings intact and should fit tightly on the intake tube. Look for:

  • A missing intake strainer or cap
  • Cracked plastic around the slots
  • A loose connection between the strainer and intake tube
  • A damaged or missing sponge sleeve
  • Open gaps large enough for the gravel to pass through

Replace a damaged strainer rather than trying to secure it permanently with tape, glue, or improvised parts. Use a replacement made for the filter or a compatible intake diameter.

3. Raise the intake above the substrate

The bottom of the intake strainer should not sit directly in the gravel. Raise it enough that water can enter from the sides without drawing substrate upward. The exact clearance depends on the intake design and gravel size, but leaving visible space beneath and around the strainer is a useful starting point.

Keep the intake away from areas where fish, décor, or strong water movement can push gravel toward it. If the substrate is very fine or easily disturbed, the intake may need more clearance than it would with larger, heavier gravel.

4. Add a prefilter sponge when appropriate

A coarse prefilter sponge over the intake can stop gravel, plant debris, and larger waste before they reach the canister. Choose a sponge with a center opening that fits snugly over the intake and does not leave a bypass gap.

A prefilter sponge also provides extra biological surface area, but it needs regular rinsing in removed aquarium water. If it becomes clogged, the filter’s flow can drop and the motor may work harder. Avoid using a very fine sponge if it blocks flow quickly, unless the filter manufacturer specifically recommends it.

A prefilter is not a substitute for a damaged intake guard or an incorrectly positioned intake. Fix those problems first.

5. Inspect the hose and intake path

After clearing the gravel, check the entire intake hose for restrictions. Look for sharp bends, crushed sections, algae buildup, and gravel lodged inside the hose. A partial obstruction can create unusual turbulence or reduce normal flow.

Clean the hose with an aquarium-safe hose brush if needed. Do not use soap or household cleaners. Confirm that the hose is connected to the correct intake port and that the intake tube is not assembled backward or left partly disconnected.

6. Check for leaks and loose connections

An air leak on the intake side can cause bubbles, rattling, unstable flow, and poor circulation. Inspect the hose connections, intake tube joints, valves, and canister head for loose fittings or damaged O-rings.

Make sure the canister head is seated correctly and that the sealing gasket is clean and properly positioned. Replace a flattened, cracked, or stretched O-ring with the specified replacement part. Do not rely on excessive force or sealant to compensate for a damaged seal.

If water is leaking near an electrical connection, unplug the equipment safely and correct the leak before restarting it.

7. Check the filter setup and flow

Confirm that the intake and return lines are installed as directed and that the canister is positioned within the manufacturer’s permitted height and distance from the aquarium. Incorrect hose routing can reduce performance and make the intake behave unpredictably.

If the filter has an adjustable flow control, temporarily reduce the flow and observe the substrate. Lower flow may help with lightweight gravel, but it does not correct a missing strainer, poor intake placement, or an exposed intake opening.

Do not restrict flow by sharply pinching the hose unless the manufacturer specifically permits that method. Use the filter’s built-in control or a suitable valve designed for the system.

8. Check the media and canister for blockage

A full mechanical-media basket or clogged filter pad can reduce flow and cause circulation problems. Rinse reusable mechanical media in removed aquarium water, and replace disposable media when appropriate. Keep the media arranged as the manufacturer specifies so water cannot bypass it or become excessively restricted.

A canister packed too tightly with media may also reduce flow. Never fill baskets beyond their intended capacity or block the impeller intake with loose media.

9. Inspect the impeller last

If gravel reached the canister, inspect the impeller well after unplugging and closing the valves. Remove debris only as described in the filter manual. Check for a damaged impeller, shaft, rubber bushing, or impeller cover.

A damaged impeller may produce grinding or vibration, fail to restart, or deliver weak flow even after the intake is corrected. Replace the specified impeller assembly if needed. If the motor housing or electrical parts appear damaged, do not continue operating the filter; consult the manufacturer or a qualified aquarium-equipment technician.

When to replace a part or the filter

A replacement intake strainer, prefilter sponge, hose, O-ring, or impeller is usually the reasonable fix when the rest of the canister operates normally. Replace the filter unit when the motor remains noisy or unreliable after the intake path and impeller are clean, the housing leaks, replacement parts are unavailable, or the unit has electrical damage.

After repairs, restart the canister with the aquarium water level and priming procedure specified in the manual. Watch the intake for several minutes to confirm that it is not pulling gravel, producing excessive bubbles, or making abnormal noise.
