A hang-on-back filter leaking down the outside of the tank is usually dealing with restricted water flow, an uneven fit, a low water level, or a damaged seal. Unplug the filter first, dry the area, and identify whether water is escaping from the filter housing, the intake area, or the aquarium rim. Do not keep running a filter that can wet electrical connections or drain the tank.
1. Unplug the filter and locate the water path
Disconnect the filter from power before touching the housing or water near the outlet. Wipe the filter and the back glass dry, then add a small amount of water to the aquarium if needed and watch where the first wet spot appears.
Common leak paths include:
- Water overflowing the filter box and running down the back of the tank
- Water escaping around a cracked or poorly seated filter housing
- Water traveling along the intake tube or power cord
- Water spilling over the aquarium rim because the filter is tilted
- Water draining backward through the intake when the filter stops
A towel around the outside of the tank can help reveal the direction of the leak, but do not place fabric where it could pull water toward an outlet.
2. Check the filter cartridge and media first
A clogged cartridge or packed media basket is one of the most common reasons a hang-on-back filter overflows. Debris restricts the path from the intake to the return chamber, causing water to rise and spill over the back or sides.
Remove the media according to the manufacturer’s instructions and inspect it for sludge, plant fragments, sand, or compacted fine particles. Rinse reusable sponge or biological media in removed aquarium water, not untreated tap water. Replace disposable cartridges when they are damaged or cannot be opened and cleaned without losing their structure.
Do not replace all biological media at once if it contains the aquarium’s established beneficial bacteria. If the filter uses a cartridge frame, keep the usable biological material and change only the part that is exhausted when possible.
Also check that the media basket and cartridge are seated in the correct position. Media installed too tightly, upside down, or outside its guide rails can block the outlet path.
3. Inspect the intake tube and impeller area
Turn the filter off and remove the intake tube if the design allows it. Look for leaves, gravel, snails, algae, or a collapsed prefilter sponge blocking the intake. Clean the intake strainer and rinse the prefilter so water can enter freely.
If the filter still has poor flow after the intake is clear, inspect the impeller chamber. A dirty or damaged impeller can reduce circulation enough to cause abnormal water levels in the filter. Clean it only as described in the manufacturer’s instructions, and replace it if the magnet, shaft, or blades are cracked or worn.
Never reach into a powered filter or try to free a jammed impeller while it is connected to electricity.
4. Check seals, clips, and cracks
Examine the filter body, lid, intake connection, motor housing, and any removable panel. Look for:
- A split O-ring or flattened gasket
- A loose intake connection
- A lid that is not fully seated
- Broken clips or mounting tabs
- Hairline cracks in the filter box
- A warped housing that no longer fits together evenly
Clean debris from sealing surfaces before reassembling the filter. A small piece of gravel or hardened mineral buildup can prevent a lid or gasket from closing evenly.
Use only replacement seals and parts specified for that filter. Household caulk, tape, or unapproved adhesives can release contaminants into the aquarium and may not withstand constant immersion. A cracked filter housing or broken mounting point generally calls for a replacement housing or a new filter rather than a temporary patch.
5. Make sure the filter is level and fully supported
A hang-on-back filter must sit squarely on the aquarium rim. Check that the mounting bracket is completely over the glass and that the filter is not being pushed outward by tubing, a lid, a light fixture, or decorations.
A filter that tilts forward or sideways can send water over the wrong edge. Remove anything interfering with the bracket, then reseat the filter. Do not force a filter onto glass that is too thick for its mounting design.
Inspect the aquarium rim as well. A damaged, warped, or unusually narrow rim can prevent proper support. Follow the filter manufacturer’s clearance requirements rather than trying to shim the unit with unstable objects.
6. Correct the aquarium water level
Water should normally be high enough for the filter’s return flow to enter quietly, but not so high that the return outlet is submerged in a way the manufacturer does not allow. An excessively low aquarium level increases the drop from the outlet and can cause splashing, while an overfilled tank can make water spill over the rim.
If the leak occurs mainly during a power interruption, the aquarium may be too full or the intake may be positioned too deeply. Unplug the filter while watching the water level in both the tank and the filter box. The water should stop rising before it reaches the tank rim or filter’s overflow path.
Never top off an aquarium merely to hide a leak. First confirm that the filter is seated correctly and that the intake and media are not blocked.
7. Check for back-siphoning after shutdown
Some water movement after the filter stops is normal, but the filter should not continue siphoning the aquarium until it overflows or drains a significant amount of water. A submerged return path, incorrectly positioned intake, or blocked air-relief opening can increase backflow.
Keep the return outlet and intake arranged as shown in the manual. If the filter has an anti-siphon feature or small vent, make sure it is not clogged. Test the filter while standing by: unplug it and observe where the water stops. Leave enough freeboard—the empty space between the aquarium waterline and rim—to accommodate normal shutdown flow.
If a shutdown test repeatedly drains the tank, stop using the filter until the cause is corrected. A spill can damage furniture, expose aquarium inhabitants to poor oxygenation, and create an electrical hazard.
8. Consider the pump or electrical components last
If the intake is clear, the media is correctly installed, the filter is level, and there are no visible housing problems, the motor or impeller may be failing. Warning signs include a sudden drop in flow, grinding or rattling, repeated failure to restart, overheating, or water appearing near the motor section.
Unplug the unit and let it cool. Do not open sealed electrical components or continue operating a filter that has water inside its electrical connection. Contact the manufacturer for the correct impeller, motor block, gasket, or replacement procedure.
Have a qualified professional check the outlet or aquarium electrical setup if a breaker trips, an outlet is wet, or you see damaged cords or plugs. Keep all electrical connections arranged with a drip loop, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s safety instructions.
When to replace the filter
A replacement part is reasonable when the problem is limited to a worn impeller, gasket, intake tube, or filter-specific media component and the main housing remains intact. Replacing the entire filter is usually more sensible when the body is cracked, the bracket is broken, the motor section leaks, or replacement parts are unavailable.
Before removing a failed filter, preserve beneficial bacteria by moving usable mature media into the replacement filter or temporarily placing it in the aquarium with water circulation. Monitor the aquarium after the change, since replacing filtration can affect both mechanical flow and biological capacity.
If the leaking filter is the aquarium’s only source of circulation, use a safe temporary air pump or other suitable circulation method while arranging the repair. Match the replacement filter to the tank size, livestock waste production, available space, and acceptable noise level—not just the advertised maximum flow.
