How to Reduce HOB Waterfall Noise

Most HOB waterfall noise comes from water dropping too far onto the tank surface. Raise the aquarium water level first, then check for restricted flow or loose, vibrating parts.

Raise the aquarium water level

The quickest fix for a loud hang-on-back (HOB) filter is usually to top off the tank. As water evaporates, the distance between the filter’s outlet and the surface grows, making the return sound more like a waterfall.

Add dechlorinated water as appropriate for your aquarium until the surface is closer to the outlet. Keep the filter’s housing and electrical connections dry, and follow the manufacturer’s fill-line guidance. Don’t overfill the tank or submerge an outlet that isn’t designed to operate underwater.

Check filter flow and media

If the water level is already high, look for a change in the filter’s flow. A clogged cartridge or packed media can reduce the return to a thin, noisy trickle.

  1. Unplug the filter before handling it.
  2. Check the intake tube and visible outlet for debris, and clear any obstruction you can reach safely.
  3. Rinse reusable media gently in removed aquarium water, following the filter’s instructions. Avoid replacing all biological media at once, since that can disrupt beneficial bacteria.
  4. Reassemble the media as directed. Don’t cram extra material into the filter or block its water path.

If the filter has an adjustable flow control, use it only as the manufacturer intends. Reducing flow may soften the sound, but it should not leave the aquarium under-filtered or make the filter struggle to maintain circulation.

A replacement part if the filter impeller is damaged

Reduce the waterfall without blocking the outlet

If the filter is clean and working normally but the return still splashes, try adjusting the filter’s position so it sits level and securely on the tank rim. Make sure the outlet returns water into the tank rather than against glass or a lid, which can add splashing or rattling.

A filter-compatible outlet baffle or diffuser may soften the falling stream. Follow its installation instructions and check that water can still exit freely. Never wedge material into the outlet or cover it in a way that could cause overflow. If the filter’s design allows the return to sit closer to the water, make that adjustment without submerging parts that must remain above water.

If the sound is rattling or humming

A steady splash usually points to the water level or return flow. A new rattle, grinding sound, or unusually loud hum is different: unplug the filter and check that the intake tube, cover, and other removable parts are seated correctly.

If the sound continues, consult the manual for impeller inspection and cleaning. Don’t open or repair electrical components. A damaged or worn impeller may need a compatible replacement; if the motor remains noisy after routine cleaning and correct reassembly, replacing the filter may be more practical. Keep electrical connections dry and use a drip loop on the cord.

FAQ

How high should the aquarium water be to quiet a HOB filter?

Keep the water surface close enough to the outlet to reduce the drop and splashing, while staying within the filter’s instructions. Don’t overfill the tank or submerge an outlet that is not designed for underwater operation.

Can I put a sponge over a HOB filter outlet?

Only use a baffle or diffuser intended to work with the filter, and install it as directed. A sponge or other material that restricts the outlet can reduce flow or cause water to overflow.

Why did my HOB filter get louder over time?

Evaporation can lower the tank water level and increase the splash. A clogged filter, blocked intake, loose part, or dirty impeller can also change the flow or create vibration.

Should I turn down my HOB filter to stop the waterfall sound?

You can use a built-in flow control if the manufacturer allows it, but don’t reduce circulation below what your aquarium needs. Raising the water level or using a compatible outlet baffle may be a better fix.
