What a loose impeller magnet causes

  • Fail to start even though power is reaching the filter
  • Grind against the motor well or impeller cover

A small amount of movement in some impellers may be normal, but the magnet should not spin freely, slide along the hub, or visibly separate from the molded plastic assembly.

How to check the impeller safely

  1. Unplug the filter first. Do not put your fingers into a powered filter, and do not handle the impeller while the unit is connected to power.
  2. Close or remove the intake if needed. Follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions so water does not continue siphoning onto the floor.
  3. Remove the filter cover and impeller cover. Keep track of small rubber caps, bushings, and washers.

Common causes of impeller magnet failure

Failed plastic-to-magnet bond

The plastic hub can separate from the magnet after repeated operation, heat exposure, chemical wear, or normal aging. Once the bond has failed, the impeller generally needs replacement.

Debris or sand in the impeller well

Fine gravel, sand, snails, plant fragments, and other debris can jam or unbalance the impeller. This creates vibration and puts extra stress on the hub and magnet. Clean the impeller well, cover, shaft, and bushings before installing the replacement.

Worn shaft or rubber bushings

A worn shaft or bushing allows the impeller to wobble. Replacing only the impeller may not solve the problem if the shaft is bent, chipped, or no longer held securely at both ends. Replace the damaged support parts if they are available for the filter.

Incorrect or incompatible impeller

An impeller that looks similar may have a different shaft length, blade design, magnet size, or hub shape. Use the exact replacement specified for the filter’s make and model. An incorrect part can cause poor flow, noise, or motor damage.

Filter running with low water or running dry

A filter that runs without adequate water may overheat or wear the impeller area. Keep the filter filled and primed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never rely on an impeller repair to correct damage caused by dry running.

Should you glue the magnet back on?

Usually, no. Household glue, epoxy, and cyanoacrylate adhesive may not remain secure underwater, may change the impeller’s balance, or may introduce material that is not suitable for aquarium use. An uneven repair can also make the impeller vibrate and damage the motor well.

Only attempt a repair if the filter manufacturer specifically provides an approved procedure and adhesive. Otherwise, replace the complete impeller assembly rather than repairing the magnet separately.

When to replace the impeller or the whole filter

Replace the impeller assembly when:

  • The magnet slips or spins separately from the blades
  • The hub is cracked or the magnet is separating
  • The shaft or bushings are worn but replacement parts are available
  • The filter motor still runs smoothly with a known-good impeller

Consider replacing the filter or pump when:

  • The motor well is cracked, melted, or badly scored
  • The replacement impeller does not eliminate grinding or severe vibration
